Anybody know what this western is?

Does anybody know what this western is? It is a western about this guy whose parents are really brutally killed by a gang and it is all about the guy tracking down the gang members to avenge his parents' murders. I do remember one of the gang members saying something along the lines of "Wheres that gold Frank!" so it might've been that his parents were murdered because they knew the location of some gold and wouldn't tell it. From what I remember the killing of his parents is really brutal, although not shown in the movie the guy does go into the house and sees his parents' remains. At one point in the movie he talks about it, he says he saw his dad's head smashed to pieces and his mom with all the skin torn off her. In the movie, he hunts down the murderers one by one. He has many adventures throughout the movie, he meets this guy who teaches him how to use a pistol and he also learns to read, since he grew up on the prarie and never learned to read as a kid. At one point he gets into a kinfe fight with one of the gang members and stabs him in the stomach. At the end of the movie, he tracks down the last gang member and engages in a pistol fight. He has the gang member pinned down but decides its not worth it to kill him and rides off.

I believe you are referring to the movie "Nevada Smith" with Steve McQueen and Brian Keith. A very good movie that has other name actors.

The story of "Nevada Smith" was a sub-plot in the book by Harold Robbins, "The Carpetbaggers."

Nevada Smith is introduced as a old wrangler working for a movie studio. At first he seems like another old geezer then the narrative goes back in time to tell the story of "Nevada Smith." There's no way justice could have been done for the story without giving it a movie of it's own.
