Sheriff Bob
Near the end as Bob and Clint leave the courthouse the sheriff misses the holster on his gun...this could be an accident, life is full of 'em.....or some great acting on sheriff bob's part ....funny in a sublime film

shareSheriff Bob Mitchell, played by dependable actor GREG WALCOTT, was a great comic relief to a rather grim movie.
Walcott has done a lot of American television over the years, including 5 or 6 episodes of "Rawhide" in the early 60's. As we all know, another great actor got his start on that series...Clint! They must have become friends while on the series because Walcott ended up in several Malpaso productions later:
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot
The Eiger Sanction
and Joe Kidd.

And Walcott was in "Plan 9 From Outer Space", too. Sort of makes Sheriff Bob Mitchell look like a great role in comparison.
I like him in this role. He's a sheriff with apparently good intentions but still weak when it really matters. For example, he goes along with whatever Mr. Harlan wants to do. Joe Kidd doesn't seem impressed with the sheriff and always seems to get the better him.
This may not be a great film, but I really enjoy it every time.
Gregory Walcott was very good at playing stupid men. Sheriff Bob Mitchell is as stupid, incompentent and clueless as they come, which is why Kidd knocks him down at the end. I think Walcott intentionally missed reholstering his gun as a way of developing the character of Mitchell.
shareThe Sheriff played by Gregory Walcott, made a living getting beat up my Clint Eastwood in 4-5 movies, Always played a good part
