the Man who did bruce Lee's voice
I thought Bruce Lee fans might be interested to know who dubbed Bruce lee’s voice in "fist of fury". Michael Kaye was a freelance journalist and broadcaster and had worked in Hong Kong radio. He also had worked for the BBC in London.
Kaye grew up in the east end of London and lived near Valance road where the notorious Krays once resided. In later life he moved to Hong Kong and worked for Radio Hong Kong.
To supplement his pay he got into film dubbing and this is how he met Bruce Lee when called to help dub the film “Way of the Dragon”. Also helping with dubbing was local film critic Jack Moore who praised Bruce Lee’s films and “discovered” Lee for a non Chinese audience. The dubbing took place late in the evening when outside traffic noise was at its minimum and would not interfere with the recording even though the dubbing studio was soundproofed.
Michael Kaye stated that Bruce made him rehearse lines over and over until he was satisfied with the result. At one stage Kaye changed some lines as they were not matching the lip movements on screen. When Bruce decided to have a go instead of kaye, he didn’t notice the change and blew the take.
At the end of the nights dubbing session as the crew were leaving someone turned to Michael and said “thank god you kept your mouth shut when he blew it”
However Bruce must have liked Michael kaye or “Miguel” as he called him for he was invited back to dub Bruce lee’s Chen Zen in “Fist of Fury” and also do the leading villains lines too. Michael Kaye later returned to London and continued freelancing in magazine work.
I hope some of you out there found this of interest to you.
