The Russian
Was the Russian suppose to be a Sambo fighter?
shareHe was the undefeated champion in rubber tube bending :)
Sambo is a mixture of different MA styles existed primarely on the territory of USSR. It started to become known as a Sam("samo" - self)-Bo("bor'ba","oborona" - fighting, defence) in early soviet times 1920-1930, in 1948 it became official.
In other words - there's no way the american "russian" could have used sambo. As there's a lot of factual errors even about eastern MA (like Funakoshi's picture), I suppose they didn't make their homework on a russian (USSR didn't existed at that time) MA styles.
As for me - I think he uses the style learnt from his employer and a friend - Bruce Lee :) It still a mistery for me - why whould BL require a bodyguard in a real life? :D

I think Petrov was just a tough guy/gangster-type. I noticed that he tried to armbar Bruce at one point so he probably learned Jujutsu and other martial arts (Judo, Karate, etc.) from the Japanese.

always wondered how come a Russian was chummy with Japanese??? Ever hear of the Russo-Japanese War, going on about the time this flick was set??
shareWell , the translator was Chinese but still in cahoots with the Japanese.....so the Russian helping them is not far fetched (he prolly didnt care who he killed.....money is money)
shareThe film takes place in 1908. The Russo-Japanese War was 1904-1905. So it would have been over for three years at that point. Besides, Petrov seemed like more of a soldier of fortune type, without necessarily any allegiance to his country of birth.
