This powerful movie should only be seen on DVD not TV

Like most great movies, they get edited so badly on TV that they harm the movie. I will NEVER watch Jeremiah Johnson on TV. This is my all time favorite movie. They did there homework when it came to accuracy in language, clothing, etc. The movie comes full circle with the fumbling fishing in the stream and seeing the mighty Indian on his horse and trying to decide whether he should reach for his rifle. Through all his travels and battles with the Crow, he finally see's the same Indian at the same stream and the Indian reaches out with the most powerful hand gesture and Johnson finally returns the gesture. There's so much in that gesture. You have proven yourself. The fight is over. You've come along way. From one mighty warrior to another.

I've only ever seen it on TV (which, interestingly enough, I always catch at the same exact part) and I still think it's very powerful. Unfortunately, after reading what you have to say I have to agree. I'm going to rent this.

The love impulse in man frequently reveals itself in terms of conflict.

yeah,, in order to really see the movie, You need to see it on wide screen dvd.

TCM shows it with out commercials and in widescreen.

AMC seems to play this movie frequently, but they always show a full-screen version. Surely wide-screen is the only way to watch this movie.

I was lucky enough to see it, some 7 years after it came out, at a college screening on a big screen. That's really the only way to appreciate the great Rocky Mountains scenery, which at the time was about as good as anything in IMAX today. A brilliant, poignant, moving film with sad, haunting, sublime music.
