Why Did The Horse Freeze, But Not The Pack Mule?
In the first twenty minutes or so of the movie, Johnson wakes up one morning and finds his horse frozen, but his pack mule is OK. Why didn't his mule freeze as well? Thanks...

shareI'm thinking the mule was naturally hardier than the light warmblood type horse he first purchased. The core of the scene problably showing he had intially no idea of what he was up against going into the wilderness like that with such an unsuitable horse for the conditions. The horse dies due to him not knowing to blanket or protect it,(or, indeed, buying a tougher animal in the first place), this being the first hard blow of realisation that he has much to learn in how to survive such a terrain.
shareMules are generally more hardy than horses.
