Is this movie racist?

Well, you can't read any discussion on any movie on IMDB without some weinie trying to find racism in it.

reply

Yeah, but usually when they post about it they have a particular scene ( no matter how outrageous) that provokes that thought.

do you have one?

I'd venture to guess that no, the movie is not racist. Eastwood himself has made it very clear that although he has played characters with certain bigotries, he himself has none.

reply

do you have one?

Of course not, I was just pointing out that there is hardly a movie discussion where someone asks about racism, particularly in the stupidest of contexts.

The only racially bigoted character that Eastwood has played is Walt Kowalski in Gran Torino, and of course, in that film, he learns to grudgingly overcome his bigotry.

As for High Plains Drifter, Eastwood clearly portrays the white community as racist and prejudiced (toward Indians and Mexicans), which is the opposite of the movie itself being racist.

The Mexicans weren't allowed to go to the picnic despite doing all the work for it. Incredibly racist...

Touche sir...

OTOH, considering the carnage that was going to happen at the picnic, they did a huge favor to the Mexicans keeping them away!

So the Stranger did the Mexicans a favor and threw the white trash to the wolves... I guess it really is racist!!

when will you all realize that the stranger was simply a manifestation of the people themselves...to the guilty he was cruel..to the innocent he was not. NO ONE who didn't deserve to be punished was harmed and EVERYONE who did, were.

he was a neutral entity of some sort who came there to deal justice to the guilty and, depending on who he was dealing with at any particular time.. he could be either good or bad.

as for the rape?...he simply saw through her airs and gave her exactly what she wanted...to be taken. her taking a gun to him was simply her embarrassment that he read her so well.

my guest is that he went from place to place to deal out justice where needed, in difference guise' and forms ...thus his sudden appearance out of nowhere and his sudden disappearance into the vapors.

Mexs didn't have much say back then in the old West. Of course Mexico was full of bandits just waiting to prey on Gringos...

reply

Not racist excluding the Mexicans. They had nothing to do with the bull whipping death of the marshal so why should they get killed when Stacey and the others came back to town for their revenge. The mane with no name was really protecting them.

The Mexicans only built the picnic tables. Far away from doing all the work.

all the bad pollen were white, so, yeah, it;s racist

reply

It's at least as dumb as the comments about racism that you are referring to.

Guess who's the weinie now.

Guess who's the weinie now.

My guess is that it's the guy who doesn't know when to use a question mark when asking a question. But I think my point is well taken. How many movie boards on IMDB don't have a post looking for racism in the stupidest of places? If you haven't noticed them, you either haven't been paying attention or are one of those weinies who do look for racism where it doesn't exist.

Mayor Hobart viewed indian (squaw) and mexican (mex) women's only vocation to being prostitutes to keep Clint's bed warm at night. He doesn't mention white. Clearly racist.

reply

Making characters politically correct in a western would be a little inaccurate and ridiculous.
