I'll go with Duncan's Ghost. Mordecai says to the stranger, " I never did know your name."

The stranger replies, " Yes, you do."

Mordecai knew Duncan very well...and what happened to him. He was under the front porch watching the young marshal being bullwhipped to death. One of the last scenes is Mordecai carving out the tombstone for Duncan.

I think the ghost is the best and only answer the film gives - because Clint says he knows his name. That doesn't sound much like 'you can guess my surname if you think about it.'

Having said that, I think it's actually three midgets on each others shoulders.

22. "Al? Al, why did I just ride into an Old West town?"

"According to Ziggy, there's a 92% chance you are here to avenge the former sheriff, Jim Duncan, by blowing up buildings, raping women, and painting the town red, literally!"

"Oh boy ..."

But failing that, I subscribe to the "Jim Duncan's ghost" theory. The only strike against it is "why doesn't anyone recognize his ghost?" ... well besides the fact that there's no definitive guide to how ghosts "really" operate, there is the thematic consistency that he's returning to a town that did their level best to remove every trace of him. They didn't even generally speak his name or speak directly of what happened to him.

Maybe it was Clint Eastwood himself.

The whole time I thought he was the dead marshal's brother until that very last scene, which made think that he was a ghost.

But you know, maybe he was Marty McFly disguised as Clint Eastwood (the capabilities of future technology, man) and he traveled back in time just to have some wild west fun.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

reply

Actually, it was Jimmy Hoffa, who didn't disapeared but traveled back in time to do some justice.
