found it more interesting than entertaining
I have seen most of Eastwood's Westerns and enjoyed them, but "HPD" I found hard to sit through because there's no likeable characters. Eastwood strolls into town and shoots 3 dudes, rapes a chick, spitefully relieves the town's merchants of most of their inventory, kicks all the residents out of the hotel, and decides to denudate a guy's barn to make some nice picnic tables. Bit of a homewrecker, too. While assuming that this was all taking place for a reason, and that these folks probably had it comin' to 'em, I had no idea what that reason was, and could summon no empathy.
I have no problem with filmmakers toying with convention (or even stomping on its groin), nor am I offended by the movie's violence, I just found it hard to like. It does give the viewer a lot to think about, and there's certainly merit there. Obviously others like it. Maybe I missed something?
