High Plains Drifter = Prequel to Pale Rider
Feel free to share your opinions. IMO there are a lot of common elements between them, though The Preacher doesn't appear outwardly to seek revenge so overtly as The Drifter.

shareI agreed in another post.

Both have undeniable parallels.
shareInteresting. I haven't seen Pale Rider in a long, long time. What are the common elements they share?
shareWithout going into huge detail, both characters have enigmatically mysterious backgrounds, along with kind of surreal entrances and departures from the towns to which they bless with their presence. They both exhibit a degree of other worldliness about them, such as when the Preacher almost hypnotically uses the axe handles to his advantage, though this is arguably more obvious across the whole of HPD.π
shareEastwood agrees about the similarities ξ

Thanks for that. Interesting to hear him comment that with Pale Rider he just wanted to cinematically explore "the mysterious rider" character more, for reasons about which even he was unsure.π
sharePale Rider is almost a remake of High Plains Drifter, except the Preacher isn't out for revenge on the whole town like in High Plains Drifter. He's there more to help, because the little girl summoned him. Still a ghost, though.
share... except the Preacher isn't out for revenge on the whole town like in High Plains Drifter. He's there more to help ...Yes.π share
The main difference is that Eastwood's character in this is not 'good' in any sense. He's simply an agent of vengeance. He's not there to help anyone.
He doesn't HURT people who don't have it coming (although everyone does to varying extents, and he metes out justice as called for), but he does nothing to assist them.
Yes, that is certainly the case.π
shareI wouldn't consider High Plains Drifter a prequel to Pale Rider.
Pale Rider was just a continuation of the theme "The Man with No Name"
And such a theme is not consistent with High Plains Drifter?π
shareWhen I think prequel I think there would be some sort of direct connection between the two movies.
There are several other Eastwood movies that have the same theme. Unknown man rides into town, havoc ensues then he leaves. All have the same theme but I don't consider them connected.
