Whipping the sheriff to death

I gotta say that the sheriff's death scene was the most brutal murder I've ever seen in a western, before or since.

Was just coming here to say that! Definitely one of the most disturbing death scenes ever filmed. What a horrible way to go.

Here's to the health of Cardinal Puff.

In a way Clint pays homage to that scene in Sudden Impact when he is beaten mercilessly by 3 thugs and knocked off the pier. Each take their turns punching him and Eastwood can't escape it.

Have you seen The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance? You don't see Stewart being beaten, but you do see Lee Marvin going crazy. It is chilling.

reply

Yes I have seen Liberty Valance.. Incredible Lee Marvin/James Stewart western. And I wasn't chilled at all over Valance's cruel beatings with that merciless whip. It was downright striking [no pun] Don't make too many splendicious villains like him anymore.
