Broadcast TV edit prologue?

Any old timers remember seeing a TV version of High Plains Drifter broadcast in the US in the 70's that had a prologue explaining that Eastwood's character was a ghost and setting up why he had a grudge with the town, etc.? I recall it being a voiceover playing over a shadowy image of a cowboy meant to be Eastwood's character, though clearly neither the actor playing the cowboy nor the v.o. were Eastwood. Hope I didn't imagine it...

I would have been interested in hearing the reason for the rape. There seemed to no reason for it. If there is one maybe someone could please explain it to me.

The entire town conspired to murder the sheriff. She was the girlfriend of the leader of the three with the bullwhips....even stood there and watched as he was tortuously killed.
