I see what you mean. Scalpers want $40 and up on Amazon because it is out of print. My local library didn't carry it. Blockbuster.com allows you to "save" it in one's rental queue, but posts an "unknown" release date. Maybe this means a new re-release comng soon? Maybe they are working on DVD special features and a quality transfer? I'm thinking about buying this movie on laserdisc since I have a player. After watching the remake, I would love to see this movie. You would have thought that the with remake out on DVD, it would have been the time to re-release the original while interest would be at it's peak.
That's great to hear! I just watched the Video Treasures VHS version (recorded in the cheapo EP mode), and it has lousy picture and sound, as well as being pan-and-scan. Do you know when it will be rereleased?
Okay, now I have the story. I was so disapointed to see that there wasn't a dvd?? I couldn't believe it. Yep, Netlflix let's you click on it to "save" it but it never comes in :(
Was so happy to finally watch it on Netflix today!
There still isn't a Netflix dvd of it, but it is one of their movies you can watch online :)
I just got the VHS version from a local library. Although some libraries in the Philadelphia area have discontinued VHS videos, others still have them. The library where I found it is in Cheltenham Township. The woman at the circulation desk mentioned that this particular one gets circulated a lot.
What I liked about it is that it's got that type of appearance that fills up the screen on my old boxy TV.
I'm not an audiophile or a videophile. If it plays, and if it's a video that is fullscreen, I am happy to have the opportunity to have viewed it.
Lucky you! I'm still hoping to find a reasonably priced DVD in the bins during my various travels. I'm usually pretty lucky in that regard. I normally don't mind having just the VHS, but this is such a wonderful film and the VHS is horrible quality.
I doubt you'll find the original OOP Heartbreak Kid DVD in a bin. I think I paid $9.99 for it at Best Buy when it came out, at the time know one really cared about it, once it became OOP and hard to find is when people started talking about it. I never bought the dvd for collectibility, I just love the film. I think it goes for $75 - $125 on ebay right now. You may get lucky and get one used for $75. I wonder who has the rights to the film now? Enterbay released it on dvd, but it was in and out of stores in the blink of an eye. Maybe someone well buy the rights and re release it on DVD again.
According to this thread it was supposed to come out in 2009, and we know that didn't happen. And it hasn't been shown on TV in years. Was there some sort of arrangement when the remake came out that this wouldn't be shown or available anymore so the remake wouldn't have to be judged against it? Because this is clearly a much better written, acted, and directed film. And it looks and feels like a modern film, so there was no need to remake it. It's probably the best film by Elaine May, Neil Simon, and Charles Grodin, and it's a shame it isn't out there for us to see. Taking it away is much worse than remaking it.
That site is offering cheap copies, I seriously doubt that the picture and sound quality will be good, you're better off waiting for an officially licensed studio release.
