Charles Grodin

Anyone agree that Charles Grodin was brilliant in this film and never found a better role, with the possible exception of Tony Abbott in HEAVEN CAN WAIT?

reply

He is brilliant. A better film? Midnight Run would be a very close second (if not as good). If you haven't seen it, see it.

reply

Yeah, you're right about MIDNIGHT RUN...he was better in that than in HEAVEN CAN WAIT.

I just saw this for the first time last night and thought that his false portrayal as a (*spoiler*) drug enforcement officer with the football players in 'The Heartbreak Kid' was similar to his false portrayal of ultra-serious FBI agent Alonzo Mosly in 'Midnight Run' (who then seizes 'counterfeit' money, just to eat).

One of my favorite scenes in 'Midnight Run'.

borbetomagus, exactly what I was thinking when I saw this scene. Although I think by the time he did Midnight Run, he perfected the art of impersonating a police officer.

Are you kidding? What about all those Beethoven movies? :-)

I think he was terrible. He can't hold a candle to Dustin Hoffman or Alan Arkin, just to mention two actors of his generation. After seeing this, his first crack at a starring role, I can see why he never made it.

Tony Abbort in Heaven Can Wait. No way that was a weak role for him. He was brilliant in Midnight Run and The Lonely Guy(he was saving grace of that disaster of a movie). Oh and what about Clifford. That was classic Grodin at his finest.

People who like Grodin talk about his 'understated' acting (like myself).
People who dislike Grodin talk about his 'wooden' acting.
