DVD- CENSORED!

I just rented this DVD thru Netflix. For one reason, I've always loved this movie since I first saw it in the theater years ago. For another, I loved Eddie Albert in this role, and since he just died, I wanted to honor him with enjoying his performance once again. He IS great, and so's the movie. Unfortunately, I was sorry to see that this is the censored version, the "TV" version. I'm thinking of the 'lodge' scene, where Cybill Shepherd's charms are blacked out. Also , the accompanying line of dialog - "You're touching me (giggle)" is cut. Now it's not that big a deal, but I don't like geting a censored version on DVD. It always makes me wonder what else they've cut out. I hope you agree.

I honestly don't remember the censored items you mention, when I saw it in the movies back when it was released. I have had a VHS copy (bad quality) for many years and they are also missing from it. I recently purchased the DVD vesion (which I must say is excellent quality, also is 16:9) and they are missing also. I've been saying for years that that was more to the "bar scene", in New York, but anyone I've spoken to doesn't agree.

I have an old vhs of this movie. The quality is bad, but nothing is censored.
Thanks for the tip on the DVD version. I won't bother to buy it now that I know they cut it up.
This flick is one of my personal top 100. Charles Grodin and Eddie Albert make this movie. Albert was nominated for an academy award for this film as best supporting actor.

My Anchor Bay region 1 DVD seems match my memory like the day I first saw it theatrically in the 70s. Cybill never shows the goods in that lodge scene (she wasn't as revealing as in 'The Last Picture Show'). BTW, it was a rated 'GP' (forerunner to today's 'PG') or 'M'.

can't wait to see the re-make w/ben stiller, his father and malik um... think it's due in early 08

reply

really? i like stiller but I think he'll make a mess of it...make it too kitschy and 'funny' while the film is actually really kind of dark!

reply

Yeah--I've seen clips from the remake & it looks 'slapsticky', when the original was a dark character comedy.

Since Netflix has now discontinued the DVD, I would settle for the censored version. It's on YouTube but could disappear any time.

TCM plays it from time to time

 I'm surprised they won; not sure why. Too many injuries on both sides today! Funny that Pete Rose thinks those guys should've stayed in the game. Times have changed.
