Line about baseball by Jesse James...

Was that the Robert Duvall character who says, "Shootin's the national pastime. Always has been, always will be." upon observing a baseball game and being told it's the national pastime?

What year did this story take place, around 1900?

How authentic is the line about baseball? Can it actually be attributed to Cole Younger or was it made up for the movie?

reply

I'm sure that was Philip Kaufman speaking through Cole. It is a sadly true observation.

that baseball game was funny as hell. Like keystone cops. I think he was using the game as a commentary on civilization. The Younger/James gang are criminals, but the game by civilized upstanding citizens was chock full of cheating and violence. Great stuff.

Dictated, but not read.

Nope, that was the Cole Younger character, played by Cliff Robertson.

The story takes place in 1876.

"You know what happens to people who shut everybody up?"
"They lead quiet, peaceful lives?"
