One thing I've never understood is how the hoods that killed Sonny knew when and where he was going to be when they gunned him down... As far as I can make out Sonny was going to rescue his sister from her husband and ended up getting shot...Can anyone shed some light on this, please?

shareTgey got it from Carlo, Connie's husband, of course. They knew Sonny had to pass the toll booth to get to her place. He most likely gave them a call after Connie called Sonny.
shareThey knew where he was and contacted him there.
They arranged for Carlos to beat the shit out of her knowing she would call for help.
Now they know where he is, and where he's going so finding the bottleneck (the toll booth) would be easy to determine and set up.
