Anyone read Gianni Russo's book?

I was going through some books my brother had, and I found Gianni Russo's (he played Carlo) autobiography. Anything "Godfather" related will peak my interest, so I started reading it.

I'm about half way through the first chapter and this has all the fetid stench of fermenting bullshit.

If anyone has read it, I'd appreciate some opinions.

No, but I’ll say this about the author:

For a sleazebag with no acting talent or experience, he manages to hold his own very well against Pacino in one of the most dramatic scenes ever filmed. That face when he looks up from dialing the phone to see Michael’s glaring, half in black … Coppolla called him “typecasting at its best” but he must have used his top directing skills to get such an unexpectedly real performance. And that fight with Connie doesn’t seem like acting at all — shocking the way unedited found footage of abuse can be. Like everything in this movie it just seemed real.

I finished the book some time ago. Apparently, a lot of his stories can be corroborated at some level at least, but I think he's augmented a lot of it. I've known a lot of pure bullshitters in my life, and a lot of what I read just sets off bells.

But it was a very interesting and entertaining read if nothing else.

EDIT: I'm not a conspiracy theorist on any level and generally detest those who are, but I will say that Russo, if nothing else, at least made a logical connection with regards to JFK's assassination and the very short reign of pope John Paul I.

What are the bs he claimed in his book?

He did a ton of name dropping, inserted himself in many heroic actions, talked about banging every gorgeous woman in Vegas including Marilyn Monroe, having inside information on top political leaders and the Vatican, and made many other claims that people who would know say a lot of what he told is a fabrication and can't be backed up.

Lol, he seems more like his character Carlo then! Is it true he hated James Caan because he supposedly really beat him up in tgf?

reply

Yes, the book touched on that.

Don't get me wrong, I have zero personal knowledge of his story, and I take the stories of others who call him a liar with a grain of salt because they have their own axe to grind. My observation was the style and tone of his story smacks of bullshit.

If he lived that life, they should make a movie about him..

Having inside info on political leaders and the Vatican reaks bs to me though.

He looks like Jerry Stiller's corpse trying to emulate a Brooklyn Guinea-Dago-Greazeball
