How has this film aged?

Im thinking about seeing it but I don't want to be completely underwhelmed. Is it still worth the watch?

reply

To those who love the Godfather, it never ages.

Doesn't really answer my question...I mean do u think (and try not to be too blind) that a newcomer could still be amazed by it?

reply

Depends on what kind of films you like. If you don't like slow burning or films with lots of development, it probably won't exactly blow you out of the water.

But, I think it has as much quality and ability to amaze as when I first saw it.

Just, please, don't go into this film with extremely high expectations. Don't go into ANY film with really high expectations, you are just looking for disappointment there. Give it a try. If you like it, great. If you don't, that's fine. It took me 2-3 viewings to fully understand and appreciate the majority of The godfather. I hope this helps.

Thx so much for the response! I'm slowly becoming a bigger fan of movies and so I think I should at least be able to appreciate it for what it is

The film is also rather complicated so I always recommend to read the easily digestible book before viewing the film. And when you finally get to watch the film, watch it with subtitles.

reply

Agree about the high expectations thing.

Some of the most dissappointing movies are the ones I have such high expectations. Like Raging Bull; for some reason never ever saw for longtime and was always on my list and a fan of Dinero. And the reputation of the movie I built it up too high and then watched and was like ... thats it. Should probably go back and rewatch.

Just watch it and make your own opinion... the things that can date a film are lousy special effects, predictable plot full of clichés or bad theatrical acting, the film has none.

Darth Vader is scary and I  The Godfather

It's very mild compared to the likes of Goodfellow and Casino. I'd you watched The Sopranos then you'll see that there's some lines and storylines from The Godfather film in there.

Watch it, but don't expect the same rush you got from Casino or other great gangster films.

*Goodfellas

Damn autocorrect! ?

I actually haven't seen too many gangster flicks (which is why I wanted to see this) so I'm really just kind of trying out the genre as a whole and figured this is a good place to start

reply

But goodfellas is definitely on my watchlist

I watched it for the first time around two years ago after hearing praises for this film from many of my friends as well as its high rating on all critic sites. I thought it would be a typical gangster film (though I haven't seen any) with lots of action.

But when the film started (it was without subtitles), I realized it was not the type of the film I had expected. It was pure drama with lots and lots of characters that I couldn't get into the movie. So I turned it off after around 40 minutes into the movie. I hated this film.

Then after a year, I grew a bit curious as to what was in this film that made it great. So
I gave it another try and managed to sit through it. It was like an 'okay' movie.

Then I again gave it a 3rd try, but this time with subtitles, and I found myself enjoying a lot from the very first scene to the very last of this film. It has everything required for a great film. It has aged really well as it is still extremely enjoyable after all these years.

Actually I have seen like the first 30 mins before but that was before I had really seen too many movies. I understood them just fine but idk...I'm watching it tonight so hopefully I can get the same experience many of the fans have

reply

It truly is a film that lends itself to repetitive viewings. The more you watch, the more you discover something new, and the more you love it.

reply

It's quality. As a period piece of gangster families, of the early to mid 20th century, it's unparalleled. That said, it's not an action flick. It's about relationships as much as it is about the crime. Easier to just watch than talk about it. Relax, enjoy and take it all in.

Just finished, Yes and yes, Just get use to the Sepia and no swear words.other than that, it was and always will be ahead of its time.Could be released to day in its form for sure. Like every best bit from Boardwalk Empire wrapped into 3 hours.

If you are interested in film in general, you need to watch this as soon as possible. Whether you like it or not is just a matter of your own preferences and that doesn't mean you have bad taste. It has its lovers and haters. I like Goodfellas better but The Godfather is close as hell.
