Let's tour the 1950s!
Earth vs. The Flying Saucers (1956)
A surprisingly intelligent film from its day that have really cool special effects that have aged remarkably well. There are long talking scenes at points. Once the action starts, half-way through if I remember correctly, it's an intense film to the finish. Great movie to teach young ones about the dangers of taking strangers at their word.
20 Million Miles to Earth (1957)
Has a pretty tense animal vs. animal fight scene that is tastefully done. The film is child-friendly, exploring many elements of exploitation, in my opinion.
The Blob (1958)
What can I say, it's scary and funny at the same time! The music in the beginning really helps to lessen down the strong tone without sacrificing the impending horror that is the unknown and unfathomable mass. Either version, color or B&W, does not change how the film is viewed in any real way. The bus, office, and movie theater scenes are unsettling and disturbing but it's mostly implied. Great child suspense vehicle.
