You must have been born in 1966 and will turn 40 this year. I was 4 when it first premiered and have no memory of it then, but I did see it some on TV in the 1980s, then taped it off TNT late one night in 1991 on VHS, about the same time I did The Birds, and watched it often after that, and it is one of my 100 favorite movies of all time. I have not seen it since the mid 1990s, but I'm very glad to hear it is out on DVD, didn't think it was, and I hope to see it on there soon. I thought it was somewhat scary, though not terrifying, but made very good use of the sothwestern desert locations, and all the human characters were very well implemented, as were the gargoyles, and their battle throughout the movie was very well paced until the exciting climax. It always has been connected to another MTV horror movie from this era, 1974's Scream of the Wolf, which I will also write about now. I don't know if the DVD has anything the original broadcast did not, but as I said hope to find out.
