Was there an earlier Japanese film with this name?

I remember as a very young kid seeing a movie about gargoyles on TV. This would be around 1970, give or take a year. The gargoyles were huge (taller than buildings). There was one specific scene I remember where a gargoyle ate a woman on the street and spat her out! Incredibly upsetting scene if you're 5. :)

You're thinking of "War of the Gargantuas". The monsters weren't gargoyles, but giant hairy bigfoot-like creatures (in the japanese version, they're clones of Frankenstein's monster).

The movie you've described could be. Gappa: The Triphibian monster. AKA. Monster from a prehistoric planet.
