You know...that's a great point.

For this is probably the most dramatic scene(if least violent) in the film..Babs being led to her doom by Rusk because she needs a place to stay for the night. She's "homeless" from her pub room(as Blaney was before her.) This would all be rather contrived if she could have just gone to the Porters.
Perhaps Babs was too embarrassed to stay with the Porters...Hetty had already accused Blaney of being the killer and killing Brenda specifically, and was visibly angry that Johnny was going to let him stay for the night....not very welcoming..
