FAT CITY

A great little movie with a lot of character,
The theme song Take The Ribbon From Your Hair was a pleasant song
It was interesting seeing welterweight champion CURTIS COKES play his role along side SUSAN TYRELL. Art "The Golden Boy" Aragon played his part well.

From this movie to other movies, SUSAN TYRRELL is a blue ribbon star.

Hello Brian.

While I can appreciate this movie for its specific, slice of life aspect, and the real life action of the amateur boxing matches, it ultimately is all very sad. I am sad for the alcoholics (who are neither funny nor witty) and the alternatively fatalistic and manipulative actions that move this film.

Though I can't fault Stacey Keach and Jeff Bridges for their excellent characterizations, it is ultimately Ruben, as played by Nicholas Colasanto, the boxing manager, who keeps hoping, trying, pushing and angling for the next shot, who gets my vote. The rest is low level hopelessness and resignment.

The acting by Susan was first rate. Aside from the concern with the drinking scenes, they did add to the mood of the film. also, Curtis COKES, the one time world welterweight champion did and excellent job of his non-boxing role.

I agree with SurrenderToto. While many people swear by this movie, this 'slice of life', I think the slice is too thin and unsatisfying. It's too sad, imo, and too hopeless. Of course having read the book, which was more positive, less hopeless, I couldn't help but feel a sense of loss with the direction this film version took--down. But it is an interesting slice of life, nevertheless.

This is one of my all-time favorites, and Susan Tyrrell is a big reason why:

Good review.
It's not one of my all-time favorite movies, it's a bit too pessimistic for my tastes, but it's certainly artfully done.
