Fat City is currently playing at the Guild Cinema in ALbuquerque, NM. August 12-14 as part of a 1970s series. A strong film, gritty, with accurate boxing sequences. It was worth the price of admission.

The actually location of Fat City was not far from Fresno, Calif. It was a real place.
Nothing exists more beautifully than nothing.
yeh, well bobby magee sed, nothin aint worth nothin
but its free . . .
whatever happened stacy keach anyways?
There is an area just outside of New Orleans, LA, called "Fat City"- it's mainly just a bunch of seedy bars and strip clubs...
shareIs it still there after all the hurricane damage?
shareYes, it's still there because it's in a suburban area that wasn't as heavily affected.. Fat City is long past its prime, though- in it's heydey (mid-to-late 70s), it was a great place to party and stay out till the wee hours- or so I've heard... Now, it's pretty run-down, though there are a couple of great restaurants there- which is pretty common in New Orleans.

Just thought I'd let you know...a lot of "Fat City" was filmed in Stockton, CA. It's my home town. Janet Leigh went to school here and Chris Isaak was born here, too. They mention Stockton several times in the film. The inside shots of the Civic Auditorium are very familiar to me.
shareI heard it turned into a public toilet by now.
Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.
Your home town is where Pavement is from, right?
This story is already over
FC was filmed in Stockton, CA, where I grew up.
A teacher from one of my classes at Hamilton Jr High (before it became a middle school), the late Mr George Westcott, plays the guy behind the counter in the bowling alley scene who is persuaded to sponsor Stacy Keach.

Not where it was filmed -- the actual place known as Fat City. But anyone with such a cute signature wouldn'tknow that.
What is the sound an imploding pimp makes?
I already READ the thread, smart-alec, and knew what they were asking, thank you very much. (1), I was merely taking occasion to bring up that I used to know one of the minor cast members and (2), another poster stated FC was filmed "not far" from Fresno, CA; it would have been more correct for him to have said it was filmed "not far from Sacramento," as Stockton lies approx. 50 miles south of the state capital and about 200 north of Fresno.
BTW, I seem to recall characters' mentioning localilites peculiar to, and adjacent to, Stockton. Though I admit I haven't viewed FC in about 20 years and memory can be a tricky thing, 'tis true...

How fabulously gradient and learned you is.Stockton must be the place of greatness; it surely is a ghost town of ingrown ambitions.
What is the sound an imploding pimp makes?
I won't dignify your snide remarks with another response--DARN! I just screwed up and MADE one!
I spent over ten years of my life out there, from youngster to coming-of-age.
Stockton is just a town of a 200,000+ population like any other town of a 200,000+ population, except that it is, stategically (or fortuitously) right in the geographic center of all kinds of industry (such as walnuts, the Firelog company, pencils, etc.) and environments. Stockton, which has a inland port with access to the Pacific Ocean, is County Seat of San Joaquin County and within driving distance of: the ocean and Bay Area; Sacramento, the state capitol; mountain ranges and forests and national parks (like Yosemite); and is the regional hub of agriculture in a valley (the San Joaquin) that's often termed "the bread basket" of the state.
The crime rate has always been disproportionately high, but that's merely a natural by-product of metropolitan areas like Stockton that have easy access to all of the economic factors (and more) and types of terrain that I described above.

Lame.

The book also took place in Stockton, so the "actual place" is Stockton.
It says clearly at the beginning of the movie that the town is Stockton, a major city 1 1/2 hours from San Francisco. It still exists!! Over 250,000 - and pretty rundown in places. I should know - I'm from there, and remember when the movie was being filmed.
shareIt may have moved but the best burger is at the Triple A in Fresno. They load it up with pastrami too! No wonder it's fat city!!!
shareRancid hole.
The sense itself was I.
NOW you tell me! ha!
It has always been thus. Delicious, yes, but no Slimey Eddie's.
The sense itself was I.
