Enjoyed the gothic, atmospheric, murky, foggy London nighttime
Hammer Films proved adept at producing modestly budgeted but highly entertaining gothic suspense and horror films. I especially enjoyed their historical settings for many of the horror movies, which took place in the 17th century central and eastern Europe, or the late 19th century London and western Europe.
Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde is an excellent example. Much of the movie takes place in a dreary, dark, foggy, nighttime London back alleys and streets. It deepens the moody atmosphere and sense of fear. I don't know how the citizens of London lived for so long in such an environment. Who in their right mind is going to venture out alone at night in the thick pea soup fog of London, alone, without sufficient street lighting and unarmed? Can you imagine the dangers from muggers lurking in the fog? It might be reasonably safe early in the evening on a main, crowded street. But just don't walk down some foggy alley or empty side street. And don't stay out too late even on the main streets. Yes, watching the foggy, dark London streets in the movie gives you the willies and the creepies.
