Deliverance (1972) vs Cool Hand Luke (1967)
which is better?
shareCool Hand Luke.
Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand.
I’ll go with deliverance.
shareI loved Cool Hand Luke but this is no contest, Deliverance FTMFW.
shareWhat's similarity for comparison?
"All men" casts? (Less a couple of women; one old, one young, in Luke.)
I'm not crazy about either of 'em. But I'll take Deliverance. It has a plot that goes different places. Poor ol' Luke just keeps running and getting caught; running and getting caught; running and getting...
It's been years since I've seen Cool Hand Luke. I need to watch that one again soon.
Deliverance, I've seen it many times and read the book too.
Pretty good book. Almost exactly like the movie.
The sheriff in the movie is the author of the book.
Cheers.
YOU SUCK.🤔
shareBoth are great movies but I like Cool Hand Luke much more.
shareCool Hand Luke by ‘a country mile.’
Deliverance was a good movie and novel but CHL is on another level, it’s a masterpiece.
They don't seem to be similar enough to make this assessment, at least to me. That they were released 5 years apart doesn't help either.
Deliverance is an excellent, tense adventure yarn with some disturbing elements that ratchets up the interest. A great ensemble piece with two lead actors representing a tremendous duality in human behavior.
Luke rests all on Paul Newman's considerable charisma, and while serious in many ways, it also has an air of comedy to it.
Newman' smarts and breezy defiance make the rest of the characters seem buffonish, even those carrying out evil acts.
I actually found most of the supporting actors somewhat weak as characters, like they were boys in a boot camp for young people. But on the whole it's a very entertaining watch.
Maybe Deliverance is a little bit better movie (and maybe not) as a compelling drama, but then, it doesn't have Paul Newman's roguish charm. I think what the two movies are aiming for is vastly different and there just isn't much to compare the two. Both excellent films.
The Defiant Ones and Cuckoo's Nest may be in a similar ballpark when it comes to similarities and contrasts, but maybe not. (Just fodder for thought.)
I only saw Cool Hand for the first time a couple of months ago. Good film objectively speaking but not really my thing. Perhaps a re-watch down the road I might like it more.
But Deliverance is one of my all-time favorites so this is no contest for me.
