The Duke's leather cuff bracelet

Anyone know what the deal was with that? Was it just part of the wardrobe? Or was it there to cover up JW's POW and Montagnard bracelets? I have no idea, but I noticed that in almost all scenes the leather one is covering up his other two...

I was just watching this today on the History Channel.

I noticed his leather wristband also, and just thought it was
to make him look tougher in some way, but now you had me thinking.

If you watch his fight scene with Dern, you can see some good
shots of the strap and you can see some bracelets. I suppose
they would have thought that Andersen with "bracelets" made
him look too swishy perhaps? Or maybe to protect them?

What a great movie!

It was to cover the tan line created by the bracelets. Fake tanning solution would have itched like hell and it would also have been slippery.

I was under the impression that he never took the bracelets off...

He didn't. If you look at all his movies, the wrist is always covered. I think the leather cuff was to cover AND protect them. John Wayne was very proud of those bracelets, and the men they represented.

Also, many cowboys of the era wore a leather cuff or two to protect their wrists when roping- avoid rope burns.
