Wayne should have sent the boy forward to Belle Fouche with brand + tale
Either on paper or the boy to memorize crucial facts of the situation for the sheriff and as fast as he can ride. These men aim to misbehave, consider me murdered if I don't show up. That way Wayne can tell Longhair that none of them will live to spend a dime from the stolen cattle if they kill him and try to stroll into town with all that beef. Maybe they catch up to the boy, maybe not. No cash from the beef man, handcuffs and a rope from sheriff. Yeah, they could try the overlay brand trick but it wouldn't be registered. And a couple hundred plus only a day or two away from town, no way. Later if the sheriff held the men in jail for questionable possession, a letter to and from Andersen's home town would show him to be a known cattleman. Squat for Longhair. They swing.
That would be the better lesson for the boys, to have won a fight before it has begun, to outwit your opponent. And/or Wayne concedes the fist fight(!!) (a good fight acting for a man with one lung) then pleads for mercy (!!!) waits for Roscoe to catch up with the rifles and use the same plan to pick them off(!!!!). I know, not really part of the Duke mythos, but otherwise it looks great in HD with some good lines.
