Andersen would have just shot Long Hair right when he turned around?
I know it would mess up the story, but as much as Andersen protected those kids and his cattle I do not think it would have been out of character to have just drawn and shot him. I would have cheered.
Thoughts?
I think Anderson was trying to keep the situation under control. If he shot Long Hair right away, those other thugs would have shot him(note how one slugged him right after he punched Long Hair.)
Anderson was hoping that things would end with no one getting hurt, and probably figured he might lose his herd for now, but could get them back. Unfortunately, with Long Hair pretty much torturing a boy before Anderson's eyes...he had to get involved. Its a honorable and sad moment, because Anderson is pretty much signing his own death warrant, and probably knows it.
If you remember they had taken his gun just before the fight started so the only thing the Duke could have drawn was his c0ck. I would liked to have seen the kid long hair threatened earlier (the one with the glasses) slice open long hair's gut before they made the horse drag him off just so I could know for certain that the son of a b1tch had died
