Question *Spoilers*

Love TC,its one of my fav westerns.Something occurred to me towards the end of the film that seems illogical. After Anderson is shot several times;Long Hair & his men go to their horses & take the cattle.Who herds cattle at night? Too dangerous.Make more sense to tie up the boys, stay put, wait for Mr.Nightlinger who has the chuck wagon & all the food.

reply

Never thought about that. Nightlinger and the chuck wagon didn't get there until way past daylight. Liked Bruce Dern's line...take everything but the fire.

John Wayne's acting is very good in this movie. Aging rancher, two sons are dead, can see hurt and pain in his face. Amazing what you see in a film many years later.

reply

Yes. There are a few things in this movie that I could criticize but this film is so good, just assume leave well enough alone. I'm 52 so that made me 10 when this film was released. It's ALWAYS stuck with me. I learned tons of life lessons from this film. When the boys question Nightlinger on his race, the tough love to cure shuddering, hard work for a decent wage and so on. Coincidently, I'm watching it now as I type this. Just as great all these years later.

reply

Cattle herding was done at night from time to time, mostly in cases where the drivers needed to make a river by a certain time due to lack of water, or when they were on a tight schedule for delivery to a town and had been slowed up by bad weather or some such thing. It wasn't common, but it wasn't unheard of either.

On the other hand, traveling at night would give the gang more of a head-start and provide greater cover.

reply

Maybe that was to show that Long Hair and his gang weren't very smart.
