Ever Thought of a Reunion/Update Movie ?

I was wondering if there has ever been any thoughts of the possibility of a update / reunion movie? There are several members of the movie still in the public eye (A. Martinez, Robert Carradine, Clay "Obrien" Cooper, Stephen Hudis, Norman Howell Jr.) I think it would be a fitting addition to the legacy of "The Cowboys". There have been very few movies that could be considered a possitive movie for young children to learn clean values of the old west, coupled with ideals that are still pertinant to todays living. Just a thought.

A reunion? Let's see, 35 years later, most of those kids would be in or near their 50's, it would be about 1907, Mrs. Anderson and Nightlinger would be gone by now. If all the kids still owned the ranch,,,,,No, not a good idea.

I spend my money on dope, sex and cheap thrills.
The rest of it, I waste.

No, I don't think so. Those guys are too old, and no matter what would have happened in regard to the ranch, you have to expect they had all gone separate ways for 30 years or more. If it were just a 'reunion' in which they shared their memories of The Duke and the movie and updated about their lives, I would like it; but really it's hard to believe they would want to do that. As you mentioned, several have stayed to this day in different facets of the movie industry, so there's a lot of focus on the here-and-now, probably too much to have a jam session about when they were kids.

On the other hand, I would be in favor of well-done fanfic updates, beginning with the return to the ranch, and ignoring the short-lived TV series. I have written quite a bit of fanfic, but I don't know if I'm one to do this.

I agree a reunion special is a good idea, but a carefully crafted screenplay could produce a good movie. I am not sure if you could use any of the old footage, as that would take away from the general theme. Yes these "Cowboys" would be alot older, but if created with movies such as Unforgiven, or even Wyatt Earp/Tombstone, I think it would work. Given the resurgence of the modern western, a shot at it would be axiously awaited. As a bonus I would add any reunion interviews for the dvd, maybe even a boxed set including both films. Of course I could be the " Vermon Ridden Son Of A Bitch That You Are"

I understand the desire to revisit these characters. For those of us who love this movie, they left an indelible impact on us. However, so did our first love and our first kiss. Do any of us really believe that, were we to magically reconnect with those people now, that they'd be the same? Hell, WE aren't the same.
Certain events serve a purpose in our lives and it is no less noble a purpose than the memories that are left behind. "The Cowboys" is one of those films that resonates with most of us, not only because of the story and characters themselves, but also because of where we were, and more importantly WHO we were, in our lives at the time we first saw it.
Mr. Nightlinger's appeal to the madame is all the justification I need that this film should never be remade or subjected to a sequel. The memory of the act (whether losing one's virginity or enjoying "The Cowboys") should be pristine, and would only be tarnished by trying to somehow 'force' the experience through an improper context or setting.
Try as we might, we can never replicate that initial shock when we watched John Wayne's character assassinated any more than we can replicate our first kiss, etc. The best we can do is look back fondly.

Sometimes, that is enough.

I give you credit, you are right in your judgement, but I do feel some sort of a reunion could bring younger fans to enjoy the works of John Wayne and the other actors. I only wish there were more persons in Hollywood willing to produce such a task.

I like the idea in the same sense that The Color of Money and The Hustler are 'connected'. Little direct correlation in the stories, simply another episode in these boy's/men's lives. But an episode that does bring them together.

Well, I think a sequel would've been nice, even had it been a tv movie, rather than the heavily censored tv series, which I don't recall seeing but would love to. Would it have worked without the Duke? Possibly. Perhaps had they used some flashbacks with new footage of things he instilled upon them during the drive we didn't see, it might've done well. Who can say?

As for fan fiction, I'd love to see some of that. I think that would be great imho. If not shared here, then uploaded somewhere would be cool.

A "reunion" would not work. While The Cowboys constituted a pretty big hit, especially for a Western, and while it carries a certain lore for genre aficionados (for obvious reasons), it is not an iconic film that a large audience would recognize today. Therefore, the market potential for a "reunion" would be extremely slim.

An alternative possibility would just be to take the premise and create a new Western where aging cowboys in the dying days of the frontier reflected upon their youth and mentors in more dangerous times.

What kind of impact would Quentin Tarantino's direction, for better or for worse, have?
