Question about the ending....

After the children turned on Reis, did they go after Dobbs? The final scene shows the children surrounding Dobbs as they did previously in the Gym. Why wasn't Dobbs able to control them? Because they found out he already had a job lined up and wasn't going to stick around?

It seems like so

It was a bit confusing to me. The second to last scene had all the students firlmy on Dobbs side. Then suddenly in the next scene they all turn on him, or at least that's how it appeared. What changed their thinking?

reply

As to your first question... no, that was not my interpretation. They just simply returned to him after they'd finished their assignment. Your second and third questions imply the first was rhetorical, but your assumption that they had "turned on him" is incorrect.

Everything you said was also my exact interpretation of the ending. Also in my opinion, when Dobbs saw the candle blow out as the boys surrounded him, he knew he would die because of his belief in the superstition that the candle blowing out meant God was abandoning the church.
