Sequel?

Recently I read somewhere or other that a sequel to "The Candidate" is in the works. Supposedly, Redford will reprise his Bill McKay character from the 1972 film in a run for the presidency. Can anyone confirm this or provide more details?

I heard they are going to make another but I don't see anything in the process. Shultz Government class ROCKS!

Redford said last Sunday on Inside the Actor's Studio that a sequel is in the mix with him playing a politician at "one of the highest levels on the Hill". So suck on that for a little.

More recently (August 2005), Redford said that McKay will now be the President of the United States. Evidently, the often rather elusive Redford is serious about making this sequel.

P.S. Redford also said during this interview that he and 80-year old Paul Newman may have finally found a script to work on together in their old age. Rumored to be "A Walk in the Woods," about two old men on a hike together.

To "ecarle": how interesting. The first letter of your "user name" is my middle initial and the last five letters of it are my last name. To top that off, my sister, Carole Carle, worked with Redford in "Downhill Racer"---she's the girl who climbs into the backseat of the '56 ("57?) Chevy with him...her first and last film. She preferred the stage.
But I, too, have heard rumors about a sequel to "The Candidate" which I think is a fabulous idea. Now I'm trying to remember the book title the film was based on...something like "Knight on a White Horse" which I believe was loosely based on the life of Jerry Brown, former governor of California and presidential candidate whom I had the honor of working for back in '91-'92 as ass't. press secretary...funny coincidences...

reply

Don't know anything about a sequel except that, yeah it's way too late.
But the original was based on John Tunney's 1970 California senate race, not
Jerry Brown. This I know for sure.

In RE: your sister, how can you mention her unique "experience" on Downhill Racer and not provide details? *sob*

reply

Details? Well, how about if I post the few I remember at the Downhill Racer message board, instead of here, where I might upset The Candidate fans...

Sounds like it could have been good. Not going to happen now, unfortunately. RIP Paul Newman.

I'll believe it when I see it and by that I don't mean having to go to Sundance for a one time screening....

I really liked the Canidate but I would be diappointed if they made a sequel especially if he runs for president. At the end of the movie it seems to me like McKay doesn't even want to be senator much less the president I think a sequal would ruin the point of the first.

NO... NO... That's not true, That's IMPOSSIBLE!!!!

Besides ruining the point of the first, tis WAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY too late in the day for a sequel. If one needed to be made, it should've been done by 75, no later than 76. Tis been 34 years since that flick, too much time has past for it to be effective. Now, a remake would be okay, but NOT a sequel. Just my opinion.

Hey, if he's talking about it, (and he has been talking about it at least since 1997) it's not going to happen.

reply

As people have mentioned it is a little too late in the game for a sequel. A senator who has been in office for well over 30 years does not have a very good chance at getting the nomination from his/her party.

It might work if you have a younger candidate choose McKay to be his VP (a la Obama/Biden) but really, what more is there to say that the first movie hasn't already said? I imagine they would just be going over the same themes.

I Like to see a sequel.perhaps mckay became like the oponent he defeated all those years ago.
