Doesn't even belong in the TOP 5 of 1972...

It's certainly a hallmark in the musical genre, but compared to the following 5, it is really undeserving of any of its 8 Oscars but the Best Actress one for Liza Minnelli:

1)The Godfather

2)Aguirre, The Wrath of God

3)Sleuth

4)Last Tango in Paris

5)Deliverance

You think Sleuth is better than Cabaret? ROTFL!

reply

The joke is on you, for the top of 1972's list actually goes on even further before it includes Cabaret:

6)Le Charme discret de la bourgeoisie

7)Solaris

And what list would you be talking about?

reply

It's the list his imaginary friend whispered to him after he took off his tin-foil hat.

"You may think that...I couldn't possibly comment."

reply

They're all great movies.

I don't know what the obsession is with ranking them, but it's hardly laughable that someone would prefer Sleuth to Cabaret.

Of the seven films you list in your two posts, only The Godfather is better than Cabaret, in my opinion. And since it won Best Picture, I have no complaints.

I would have been fine with The Godfather winning Best Supporting Actor, preferably for Al Pacino, but I guess that's what happen when you split the vote of one film between not two but three strong performances.

Deliverance stunk but was still better than Cabaret (just barely)

1972 was a bit weak overall - The Godfather & The Sting were probably the two best movies of the year by far... (didn't see Last Tango)

Cabaret - disappointing and overall weak - 4 / 10

reply

The Sting came out in 1973, not 1972.

I thought Cabaret was a very good movie, not as good as THE GODFATHER, but equal to DELIVERANCE and SLEUTH. I never saw LAST TANGO.

reply

I gave Cabaret a 4/10 as well. It was either that or 3/10. It was bad. Just really, really bad. I haven't been watching it as much as enduring it.

reply

First of all Last Tango in Paris wasn't eligible to be nominated until 1973. That said, TO ME, this was the best film of 1972. I like The Godfather, more now than when I saw it in 1972, but I think Cabaret is the richer film. In fact I think it is one of the best musicals ever made.

reply

Although Godfather's reputation has increased over the years, you have to realise that at the time of its release Cabaret was a radical film.

Admittedly The Godfather and Sleuth are top examples of traditional filmmaking but...I'd suppose then you don't think that Aguirre, Last Tango in Paris, Deliverance, Le Charme Discret de la Bourgeoisie and Solaris are really that radical, at least not nearly as much as the unique Cabaret, do you?

I never stated it was not a great film, it really is. However, it pales when paired up with any of those comtemporaneous masterpieces of uncanny thematic scope and cinematic auteur craft.

I feel like there was a lot I didn't pick up on in this movie after just one viewing. It seemed a lot deeper than it let on, especially with the tangled relationships and political metaphors of the club. Definitely a movie you have to watch twice.

In any other year, Cabaret would probably be one of the best. But 1972 was such a strong year, that it would merely be the top 10.

I may be the only person alive who can not stand "The Godfather"

I know lots of people who have not even seen the film.
