What I gathered is that Don moved out and started living in this apartment a month ago, encouraged by a girl Linda Fletcher. But she left him for an artist she met in a party and now lives in Mexico with him. So was Don living alone by himself in that apartment or had he any other friends?
If he was all alone, its very depressing.
I was always under the impression that Linda was the only real friend Don had prior to meeting Jill.
shareHe lives there by himself. He says so early in the film. It's not depressing, he went there to learn about being on his own. Something he had never experienced before.

Not depressing because he got around and knew people in area (i.e. laundry, ice cream shop). As stated he had Linda at first then Jill but as he proved to his mother and Jill (during scene where Jill walked out on him) he was more than willing to still be there on his own.
Most likely someone else would have moved in next door and became friends with him as well. I personally am not a peoples person like Don but when I lived in my first apt, neighbors were always wanting to say Hi or have conversations.
