Michael Jackson Song
Does anyone else find it funny that the title track to this movie was a really sweet, happy, soft song, sung by a young Michael Jackson, while in the movie people were getting their faces eaten off by rats?

one of the most touching & universal & beautiful songs of the 70s ^^
grtz
It was a sweet song. I don't know the status of the early 70's Jackson 5 Saturday morning cartoon series, but part of every show was an animated "video" featuring one or more of the band's hits. "ABC" was the theme song, I think, but "Ben" was a hit at the time so it made the cut. I bring this up because the IMDB review(er) mentions that "most people don't know that he's (Michael) singing about a rat" (parpaphrased). That's probably true, but NOT ONLY did the animated video in the cartoon feature Michael singing his ode directly to his animated rat friend, an animated "Ben" was heavily featured in the show - sort of part pet/part pal for Michael. I seem to recall that he even had a white rat friend, though don't think that the name "Socrates" ever came up. Ben and his pal were definitely major supporting players, though. Which is pretty frickin' creepy on the whole. It's also worth noting that at the time feature films often made a quick jump to network TV (albeit heavily edited; and remember that there were NO cable networks save for a very limited Pay-TV movie system most often found in hotels and most often featuring porn), so I would have seen first Willard then Ben within a couple of years of their original release, and got the association between the animated and movie "Ben" right off the bat. I expect that this is true in general for the late 60's/early 70's generation of Saturday morning cartoon kids.
sharebeautiful song me cry everytime...u can find it on the album Ben dated 1972
sharethe song is awesome.i love it~!
shareAh-hem,ah-hem,amee,mmee,mee......Ben,the two of us need look no more. For we`ve both found what we`ve been looking for.Ben,I forget the rest of the words, because it`s been years since I heard the lyrics to this song, but I remember that they were anthromorphic in the words, the words that Michael Jackson sang, oyhea the words he sang, ohhh the words he sang, the words he sang, ohh the words he sang,he sang to meeee.Do`nt let thorns in your side become nails in your coffin".-Bruce Richard Bundy 10/2006
sharethats ahh.. great..
shareI heard this song before I even knew about the movies of Willard. Its so ironic, because for years, I've always named my pet mice "Ben". I knew the song Ben was about a rat (my brother told me). I've owned rats for 10 months now, and its the first time theyre not named Ben...hwoever, I bought the 2003 Willard movie yesterday and watched it, I thought it was ironic that there was a rat called Ben, until I realised that the song Michael sang was not just co-incidentally called Ben...it was THAT Ben...
you know those moments when a huge connection is made in your life that you totally didnt know about, but it was always there? I felt that...it was like "Woooooaaaah...no wonder I love this movie already..."
I love my ratling boys! I will always have one from now until forever (and I'm a dorm-boarder , so its always possible)
Is this movie any good?
Me and my best friend watched this when we were about 13. When the song "Ben" was playing both of us were crying. Then I started laughing when I realized that Michael Jackson had us crying over a rat. Im NOT a Michael Jackson fan, But anyone that can write a song that makes me cry over a rat really has talent.
shareMichael Jackson didn't write the song. It was written by Don Black and Walter Scharf. Donnie Osmond was first supposed to sing it but he was unavailable, so it went to Jacko. I think he saw the film and liked it because he later got a pet rat he named Ben. The lyrics of the song are about the boy in the film and his friendship with Ben.
Why were you people crying? I haven't seen the film, I don't like rats (apart from Pixar's Ratatouille) and I think this film is deleted so I don't know. I saw footage earlier today of a young Jackson performing Ben live. It was a really good performance and you could see the emotion he put it.
R.I.P Jacko, you will be missed.
While I was watching the dog, cat and rat videos on YouTube, I felt I needed to come to the IMDB for something. This is to appeal for donations to their guardian, Gregory Pike. You see, the dog, named Booger, is a Rottweiler-yellow Labrador mix, the cat, named Kitty, is an American tabby, and the rat, named Mousey, is a white rat, just like Socrates in, "Willard." All three animals and Mr. Pike share a peace bond with one another. They've been roaming around the sidewalks of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Bisbee, Arizona, Venice Beach, Santa Barbara, and San Francisco, California. When people take a moment to take video and still pictures of, and pet Booger, Kitty and Mousey, they give donations to Mr. Pike.
To learn more of what I'm talking about go to www.helpdogcatrat.com on the Web.
The donations should be made in memory of Michael Jackson.
What if I want to learn more, but don't want to go to www.helpdogcatrat.com on the web.. is there a www.helpdogcatrat.com anywhere else than the web?

Hail Caesar ! And if it's not done by sunrise, I'll cut your balls off.
Who composed this song? I think it was nominated for an Oscar. Strangely, Michael Jackson was lonely just as in the song lyrics. He claims that he was not permitted to have any friends and was forced by his father to rehearse singing and dancing. What a sad childhood he had. These scars haunted him until his premature death. Young Michael wished he had a friend like Ben to talk to.
shareThe lyrics to the song were written by Don Black, who wrote the lyrics to the themes of the James Bond movies Thunderball, Diamonds Are Forever, The Man with the Golden Gun, The World is Not Enough, as well as Surrender (at the end of Tomorrow Never Dies). Frankly, I think it is a better performance than anything Michael Jackson did as an adult.
