Strange finding in the sewer SPOILERS

When Danny visits the sewer the 2nd time, he finds a severed hand in the goo! Does that refer to Willard (saw it some time ago but forgot much about it), or to anything else? Or was it just a random twisted joke by the prop guy?

It seems so out of place in a cute kiddie horror movie…

I thought it was a hand too. I was wondering why he didn't even scream or anything. Just threw it to the side like it was nothing. But now that I learned it was a glove that clears it up.
