I don't think he was annoying at all. He was just a very lonely child with heart problems and his father had recently died. He was very sad and needed a friend, and when he had finally found a friend in Ben, everyone decided they wanted Ben dead. I think he was just going through a rough time in his life and needed the gift of friendship.
