Earl Hamner, Junior

IMDB says earl Hamner, Junior, is from Virginia, but he pronounces "out" as though he were from Canada.

Yep, it’s pretty noticeable actually. And I always assumed that he was Canadian, prior to realizing that the show was based on his childhood. I actually brought this up one time at the IMDB message boards, and some dude replied, and for some strange reason, took offense over it, and flamed me? In either event, he claimed that many people from rural Virginia pronounce their “OU” words the same. My uncle was from Virginia, and I’ve met several people from there, and never have I encountered this accent among Americans before.

nor I, though i have Canadians. I wonder maybe Michigan Upper Penninsual?

reply

That would make sense. American’s living at or near the border, or living in border towns, you would think would talk this way. Though I’ve personally never met any. But I don’t really get out much.

reply

True, and it is a pretty big stretch to say Virginia is near the Canadian (or any) border, except Maryland and North Carolina ;-)
