The Kids' Names.

John-Boy and Jim-Bob have got to be the worst. I know John-Boy is a Junior, so a name like Johnny, or Jackie would be suitable, and Jim-Bob could be Jimmy, or Jamie; they obviously like the name Bob, to just stick it in there. Mary-Ellen, Ben and Elizabeth's names are decent enough. I like the name Jason, and Erin is a very pretty Irish name.

Jim Bob (or James Robert) also had a twin brother named Joseph Zebulon.

I always found it odd that they waited for their third son to name after John's deceased brother Ben. I understand the first son being named after John, but to me, Jason should've been named Ben. But perhaps Jason was named for one of Olivia's relatives.

Al - Alicia
An - Andrew
Jo - Joseph
Be - Benjamin

Maybe they thought Jason would be a girl so they didn't plan on naming him Ben. After Mary-Ellen the idea occured to them for the next boy. They didn't use Grandma's name until Erin came along.

Or maybe Olivia always wanted to name a son Jason, but agreed to save it for the second boy so that John would have his namesake heir in the first son.

The mirror... it's broken.
Yes, I know. I like it that way. Makes me look the way I feel.

I always thought it was interesting that they changed the names, even though both novels and the first movie (SPENCER'S MOUNTAIN) used the book names:

Clay-boy
Becky
Shirley
Matt
Mark
Luke
John
Patty-cake
Donnie

Not a big fan of Clay-boy or Patty-cake. Love Becky, of course. Suppose they felt they had to lose the four Gospel names when they eliminated one of those sons from the cast. Donnie was an infant in SPENCER'S MOUNTAIN.

Like that show, Eight is Enough. The SECOND son was named after the father, nit tbe first.

I was born in 75 and didn't watch this show till about 5-6yrs ago. Were these names acceptable back when the show was filmed?

reply

Jim-Bob and John-Boy are the funniest.

It was hilarious when the Carol Burnett Show did a skit "The Walnuts," where Carol was John-Girl (with the big cheek mole and glasses), plus there was Mama-Woman and Daddy-Man. Yeah, Jim-Bob and John-Boy are funny names, and I recall episodes where they feel awkward with their names and wish to be called something more grown-up (like John, or James Robert).

I hated the name "John Boy". They could have called him Junior, Little John or J.J..

reply

Little John would have made him sound like the character from Robin Hood. and 'junior' is a silly thing to call anyone. John-Boy is nice I think.
