Livvie and Grandma disapproved of the Baldwin sisters...

...except when they needed something from the Baldwins (e.g. room and board for Jason after the fire, Olivia selling them that bottled soap).

reply

Olivia and Grandma were strict Baptists and knew that the Baldwin sisters were manufacturing bootleg whiskey and strongly disapproved. During The Reunion, both Walton women got a chance to really spend time with the Baldwins and after that, their attitude toward the sisters softened...somewhat, LOL.

I remember the Baldwin sisters making bootleg whiskey they referred to as "the recipe". I think it was for personal consumption and maybe sharing a little with family and friends. If Livvy and Esther didn't like it they should have minded their own business.

reply

They were selling it; kind of a holdover from Prohibition. Apparently the sisters never knew it was alcohol, or at least never said so.

They did mind their own business. they didn't lecture the Baldwin sisters on the evils of drink ir anything, but they did disapprove.

reply

That was probably why Livvy objected when the Baldwin sisters asked to adopt Jason, because of the recipe. There was no other reason to object seeing as the Baldwin sisters had known Jason and all the children from the time they were infants. Jason would have been able to come over anytime and spend time with Livvy and the family so nothing else would have changed.

I can't imagine Olivia wanting any of her children to be adopted by anyone. The waltons were a very close family. having your child coming iver to visit is not the same thing as having them living at home.
