reply

Funny. We always notice the opposite. There are episodes where Lamont is wearing a nice denim jacket with jeans to match and not dusty or dirty at all like he just walked in from a modeling shoot.

Of course he did have that tan leather-like jacket that finally got a rip on the sleeve and he just kept on wearing it.

reply

Yeah. I was watching an episode this morning, and I noticed that he was wearing this tan/beige jacket with a conspicuous, large tear on the right-arm sleeve.

I agree with the other poster that you wouldn't expect him to dress like a GQ cover boy because he was after all a junk dealer. But it would be rather stupid for anyone to walk around with a large tear on the arm of their jacket, as well as unrealistic for anyone not to mention this to the person wearing the torn garment.

If you were a poor Watts junk dealer, do you think your friends would mention it to you? I thought it was a nice touch.

He is a junk dealer from Watts,California whadya think he is gonna wear...a Vera Wang tuxedo?

reply

Exactly! His clothing was likely always from places like The Salvation Army and often got dirty and/or torn while hauling junk.

mismatched clothes were the rage in the mid-late 1970's. that was a real low-point for most things fashion-wise.

reply

ok spy but Rollo was always sharp matching and all

you're right gus, rollo was a sharp dresser.

reply

Okay, let's see you drive a junk truck, get off and on while loading some big pieces of junk on said truck and see how you keep YOUR clothes in pristine condition. I work in a loading area for a shipping company and start out looking neat and end up looking like I've been hanging with Indiana Jones by the end of the workday. Especially in hot weather.

Why does it matter Gus?

reply

mactahc it doesn't "matter" so much..But i noticed Lamont was not a snappy dresser compared to his partner in crime Rollo

More than likely, Rollo didn't have a real job except maybe doing something illegal.

reply

Yeah, but it was obvious Rollo was supposed to be 'hip' and 'cool.' Lamont was more down-to-earth.

And...Watts junk dealer always saying money was tight, remember.

That's because when Rollo ripped off a house in Beverly Hills, he didn't just take the jewelry and electronics, he also grabbed some of the rich dudes' threads too!

reply

You can always tell the early episodes from the later ones because Lamont's wardrobe changes big time. In the early seasons his clothes are raggedy but in the later years his whole style switched; he permed his hair, trimmed his 'stache, always wore sunglasses indoors.

"Lemme at 'em! I'll splat 'em!"

reply

That perm always had me laughing like crazy!

Lamont did dress rather bummy in the beginning, but it was understandable considering his vocation, class status and the decade he existed in. I think it would have stood out more if he had always been neatly dressed.

reply

It would look out of place on a junk dealer (especially the guy out there getting the junk.) Why wear nice clothes in that situation?

reply

Lamont was a very handsome man but I always thought he dressed like his character; a blue collar average Joe.

reply

His raggedy clothes were for work, I think he looked fine when he was going out on a date or with friends

reply

Seen some cool looking button up shirts throughout the series that i'd like to have, dont think I could pull off wearing Rollos plaid purple leisure suit though 
