How would a 'Jeffersons'-style Julio spinoff have worked out?
I've read comments on the board saying that it looked like they were trying to spin Julio off into his own series, and I'm inclined to agree that it looked that way. As to whether or not it could have worked, I'm less sure.
On paper it seems to make sense. In a way, Julio seemed like a Hispanic counterpart to George Jefferson for Fred Sanford, "the Archie Bunker" counterpart, except the tension was more "ethnic" than "racial." But, Sanford and Son would have been as sound a springboard as All in the Family was for The Jeffersons.
The goat, the mother, the sister/nephew, the Hispanic factor, the potential for occasional Fred/Lamont cameos - seemed like pretty good ingredients for at least moderately successful two-season sitcom. And, disregarding the receding hairline, Sierra wasn't a bad looking guy and was playing a character that was both likable and distinct - and during a period when ethnic/working class sitcoms were becoming "in" again. The timing couldn't have been more ideal.
If it was ever in serious talks, I think its a shame it didn't come to fruition. Even if it didn't reach the success of AIF, S&S, or The Jeffersons, it could potentially have laid the groundwork for higher quality projects or programs centered on the Hispanic-American family that may have been as, if not more, successful.
And, I say this because arguably there STILL hasn't been a serious, successful Hispanic/Latino family sitcom to air, as of yet. AKA Pablo bombed badly in the '80s, George Lopez's show was Everybody Loves Raymond lite (a less nice way to describe it was "crap"), and Nick shows like Taina and The Brothers Garcia were good quality but never were able to catch on with mainstream viewers.
But, what do you all think? Could it have worked? More importantly, was it ever seriously discussed?
