What did Lamont do for a living?

I know that Lamont drove around all day finding the crap that they sold in the junk yard via that red truck.

My point is that he seemed to have his act together. He had nice friends and dated some classy girls. Why didn't he get his own place and visit Fred on the weekends to make sure he didn't get himself into trouble with any of his hair-brained schemes?

I guess the immediate answer to that would be that there wouldn't have been much of a show had he moved out. He therefore, never left because that was his home/place of employment. He was his own boss and as Fred would say "heir to all this." Also, because Fred appeared to be incapable of taking care of himself, but in reality, he was just being manipulative.

Realistically, Lamont worried about Fred, didn't wanna leave him alone, and Fred did manipulate Lamont with the guilt trips, that's one of the things that made the show, all the arguing, schemes, and everything else, you knew they loved each other

True about there not being a show if Lamont moved out on his own, but my own immediate answer is because Fred was like some other parents who manipulate their kids into staying against their will; he wanted to get his own way. Hence, the numerous fake "heart attacks."

A recurring theme of Lamont's character was that he had bigger dreams for himself and a desire to strike out on his own. He constantly talked about and/or threatened to do it...but couldn't bring himself to leave Fred alone. That's why he stayed. He did finally leave, and that's where Sanford began.
