If Maude is 47

I'm 19. The episode when she gets knocked up at 47. Please. She looks 60. How could that really happen?

reply

Yes, there have been cases of older women being pregnant. It may not happen all the time, but it does happen. Usually they say that there are lots of health risks for women at that age to be pregnant as well as for the baby. That was one of the reasons the abortion topic came up in the episode...

reply

Women can become pregnant until they enter menopause and for the average woman that doesn't occur until the early to mid-fifties. Don't act so astonished, or at least take the trouble to learn a bit more about female reproductive biology--might save you a lot of future embarrassment.

everybody looked older then, they smoked MUCH more, in a lot more places. Oh and I'm sure they did a lot more stuff besides smoking tobacco too. I'm in my 40's now and I look much younger. Well, I also wear jeans and tees a lot and don't have makeup caked on.

reply

Very true. I couldn't believe that Carroll O'Connor was about 47 and Jean Stapleton 48 when All in the Family started in 1971.

People ate differently and didn't exercise. And people now use botox and plastic surgery.

reply

If she had just colored her gray hair she would have looked much younger. But Bea was also a heavy smoker.
