Hi,
I see this board isn't too active but decided to post anyway. Ever noticed that a certain type of person doesn't like Maude? I found mostly men that felt threatened by her. Anyone else?

Well I would fall into that category, but I was never forced to watch it. I loved it all on it's own!
shareloved "Maude" when I first actually watched an episode. Before that, I boycotted it thinking that it was left wing propaganda, but after watching a few episodes on a Nick-at-Nite rereun-athon, I found myself hooked. I wish they would bring the show back. It was really well-written, and consistently good. I don't think it ever jumped the shark, unlike "All in the Family" in later years. Too bad Nick-at-Nite has become the domain of countless episodes of "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" and "Roseanne", and dozens of vintage shows from the 50s throught the 70s have to duke it out for space on TVLand, along with "modern classics like "Wings" and "Cheers". There were some really good surprises and cliffhangers, but its been so long since I've seen it that I can't remember specific examples.

I never felt threatened by her, and my dislike of the show had nothing to do with her political views. I just got tired of Maude and her husband screaming at each other. Not a good representation of marriage.

I agree that there is too much yelling on the show. I was too young to remember when it first aired in the 70's, but I am currently watching the re-runs of the show. I don't mind it, but there is way too much yelling. Every episode they are screaming and yelling at each other. I have to change the channel sometimes because it gets on my nerves.
I do have to admit though... Adrienne Barbeau was definitely not hard to look at back then ;)

shareI am a youngish (30) male republican, and I used to like this show. it was funny. I liked all in the family better though. but both of them were parodies of the extreme poles between feminism and chauvenism.

I am a male and I like the show , mostly because of Adrienne Barbeau . However I do not feel threatened by her , because I was born and raised during the POST-feminist/Woman's Roghts era, so to me a strong Independant woman is not that unusual or out of place , To me it is very common.

sharePeople with strong political religious views that are the opposite of Maude’s on some controversial issues. Now I find this sort of funny. My mother likes All in the Family and even though she disagrees with Archie’s behaviour she’s still able to laugh it. And she does sometimes verbally disagree with Mike, who is an Atheist, when something religious comes into the conversation of the show, but that doesn’t make her turn against the show. She’s definitely a fan All in the Family. We both are. Also I will point out that my mother didn’t even have a problem with Maude when she made her appearance on All in the Family. But then when Maude had her own show, she didn’t really like it. I think what happened here is she might’ve been okay with it for a little while, but then came along the controversial abortion episode, and suddenly she wasn’t into the show anymore and now several years later says she was never a fan of Maude. Myself, I love both shows, but my mother will not watch the DVDs of Maude with me (the only exceptions are when she appears on All in the Family, or even that one time Carol Burnett did a parody of that on her show one time that was actually pretty funny)

share My dad couldn't stand her. It had nothing to do with politics. Bea Arthur happened to bear a strong resemblance to one of our neighbors that my dad disliked. The woman was a busybody and a troublemaker.
As for me, I was too young to really have strong political views when I first watched the show. As I grew up I developed very conservative views that are in total opposition to a lot of Maude's liberalism. But I just love her. I may not agree with her politics, but Maude is a good woman who menas well. She'd be a great friend to have, provided you didn't mind the yelling.
And Bea Arthur's comedy timing was incredible. She was funny.
My mom does not like the show because she is pro-life. She says she was okay with things before Maude had an abortion but she could never watch it after that.

I found her abrasive, rude, one-track, and lacking in any sensitivity, but definitely NOT threatening. I mean, how could she be a threat to me, as a caricature in a television show? She, nor her type, could take anything from me, nor prevent me from accomplishing things. I didn't like Maude as a show because the humour was very limited and totally one note, assuming that the liberal posture just had to be correct. Nothing else, Bea Arthur was a competent actress, who managed mane things in her career, and the rest of the cast were certainly up to the rather shallow portrayals required, but that didn't add up to a comedy hit for me.
