How did Carradine appear with a shaved head every episode?

I can't figure out how Carradine appears in every episode with hair in all the present-day scenes, but has a shaved head in the flashback scenes.

I mean - how could he shave and re-grow his hair every week?

He's wearing a bald-cap. It's very apparent.

A skin cap is the likeliest explanation, but they also could have shot many scenes from many episodes in advance, and Carridine COULD have been shaven bald in some of those scenes. Not sure if that's really the case, however...

A pictorial feature in TV Guide back when the show was being made showed the bald make-up being applied to Carradine's head. I don't know whether Radames Pera was shaved or wore make-up at the time. It's also unknown (to me) whether Keye Luke, Philip Ahn and the other priests wore a cap or not.

Always remember that YOU are unique. Just like everyone else.

It was explained in an interview that David Carradine initially shaved his head for the part. As time wore on in the first season, you saw that his hair grew out. I think DC said that he didn't know that he didn't have to do it, but later decided that it helped him with the role. After his hair started to grow back in, they used a bald cap on him.

I also seem to recall that Radames Pera was offered something extra (money or perhaps a gift) for also shaving his head in the first season, and I think he said that other kids made fun of him.

If I can find the exact interview, I'll post it because I am really certain of the fact that DC shaved his head at first. I think I saw in one of the DVD sets.

You can never have too many hats, gloves, or shoes.
