Was it "Run before you fight. Fight before you maim. Maim before you kill."

I think it was avoid the fight if you can, wound if you can't avoid the fight. If wounding foe doesn't stop him, then maim. If foe still insists on killing you than you can kill to survive.

It was pretty close to this:

Avoid rather than check, check rather than hurt, hurt rather than maim, main rather than kill.

That may not be perfectly verbatim, but almost.

Yeah, WatchAnythingOnce has it right. "For all life is precious, nor can any be replaced."
