'Alethea' question

In "Alethea", I am not sure as to how Caine 'reversed' Alethea's lie which she told in order to prevent him from being hanged. Could someone explain it to mwe? Thanks.

reply

No, no one can explain it, because the whole story is pretty ludicrous - a contrivance to SOMEHOW get Caine in a precarious spot on a gallows. And for all his passivity and calm acceptance, I don't think Caine would just stand there with a noose around his neck; in effect, saying "Okay, hang me if you must."

reply

I agree but I guess that the 2 robbers said Caine wasn't with them when captured so therefore Caine didn't fire that gun.

In this episode, the point is that 'Alethea' believes she sees Caine attack one of the stagecoach drivers. She speaks what her upbringing has prepared her to say rather than what she saw exactly so Caine seeing her with the possibility of destroying her soul by a lie allows things to take their course. It seems also likely as the episode continues that her Uncle the sheriff begins to see that Caine is more than a violent crook.

It IS the sure cure to all hangovers.

I can't work out if the young Caine's robbery was a set up in that episode by Mater Po. They would sometimes do that to teach life lessons.
